Abstract
743,552. Endless belt conveyer driving gear. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. June 23, 1954 [June 23, 1953], No. 17393/53. Addition to 619,075. Class 78 (1). The conveyer belt drive of the parent Specification is modified in that each hydraulic coupling is of a form such that, with its input shaft driven at constant speed, its output torque may, during starting, be gradually increased. As shown, two driving drums 2, 4 located in the return run at the discharge end of the belt 18 are driven separately by squirrel cage motors through hydraulic couplings of the scoop type, wherein the scoops may be adjusted to vary the fluid contents of the couplings and therefore their torques, 30 and 32 being snub rollers. Roller 32 is adjustable for take-up as may also roller 52 at the feed end of the belt. A weighted vertically slidable roller 38 between the driving drums and the feed end on the return run regulates the tension drop across the driving drums so preventing slip occurring. Preferably to avoid slip during starting a further driving drum 48 driven through a hydraulic coupling of the traction type is located in the return run adjacent the feed end of the belt a take-up roller 50 and a weighted roller assembly 51 being interposed between it and the feed end. Alternatively as shown in Fig. 4 the feed end roller 53 may be driven through a hydraulic coupling of the traction type and the drive and roller assembly may be slidable as a unit so that tension may be applied to the belt by a weight 54. For a reversible belt conveyer all weighted roller tensioning devices and the further driving drums are duplicated on each side of the unit comprising the drums 2, 4 which is located half way along the return run, means being provided for energizing the motor only of that further driving drum which for that particular direction of movement is located at or adjacent the feed end of the belt. Stops are provided for limiting the upward movement of the weighted tension rollers on each side of the drums 2, 4.
