Abstract

855,045. Change-speed gear. ALLISCHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 30, 1958 [Dec. 30, 1957], No. 42094/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] A pump 101, for supplying fluid to a vehicle transmission, may be connected by a first clutch mechanism 82 to the engine of a motor vehicle and by a second clutch mechanism 92 to a ground engaging traction element upon disengagement of the first clutch mechanism. In the preferred embodiment, the pump 101 is of the gear type and supplies fluid from a reservoir 107 to a manually-operated valve 111 controlling clutches 53, 54 and 56 providing two forward ratios and a reverse drive between the input and output shafts 26, 12 of a gear-box which is shown as a developed view. The reverse drive is,provided by the gears 29, 36 meshing with each other while the two forward ratios are provided by the meshing pairs 43, 51 and 44, 52 which are also driven from the gear 29 by a gear 31. When the engine of the vehicle, which may be a crawler tractor, is running the pump 101 is driven through the clutch 82 and gears 74, 76 by a shaft 7 3 driven from the input shaft of a torque converter which also drives the input shaft 26 of the gear-box. When the vehicle is being towed for starting, the clutch 82.is disengaged by a hand-lever 98 which also displaces a gear 93 to cause it to mesh with a gear 94 on the shaft 12. The clutches are of the multiple friction disc type having splined engagement with their driving and driven members. A gear 14 on the shaft 12 drives a gear on a transverse shaft (not shown) situated at the rear end of the vehicle and connected to the track sprockets through steering clutches and toothed reduction drives. The pump 101 may, alternatively, be used to actuate the steering clutches.
