Abstract
503,319. Hydraulic power transmitters. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES. Aug. 4, 1937, No. 21554. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1936. [Class 69 (ii)]. [Also in Group XXIV] A transmission for automobiles comprises a hydrodynamic torque converter, a hydraulic coupling and a mechanical change-speed gear yielding direct drive and over-drive selectively and situated between the torque converter and the coupling. The torque converter comprises an impeller 3 keyed on the input shaft 7, a runner 4 keyed on the intermediate shaft 9, and a fixed reaction member 5. A second intermediate shaft 16 carries the impeller 13 of the coupling, the runner 14 of which is keyed on the output shaft 18. A pinion 26 splined on the shaft 16 can be moved axially to engage a pinion 32 mounted on a lay shaft 30 and rotating with a pinion 31 in permanent mesh with a pinion 24 on the shaft 9 ; speed increase is thus effected. Alternatively, the pinion 26 can be moved so that claws 25 thereon engage claws 25 on the pinion 24, yielding direct drive between the shafts 9, 16. The driving and driven shafts 7, 9 of the torque converter can be connected mechanically by a sleeve 33; the driving and driven shafts 16, 18 of the coupling can be connected mechanically by a sleeve 39.
