Abstract

492,199. Change-speed gearing; claw clutches. OLIVER, A. V. April 14, 1937, No. 10558. [Class 80 (ii)] In a clutch for use in change-speed gears of motor vehicles in which positive and silent engagement between a driving and driven element is obtained by first bringing their rotational speeds into synchronism, friction plates such as k, l slidably mounted upon and in constant positive operative connection with a driving element h and driven element i respectively and embraced by a fork m, are clutched together to synchronize the speeds of the driving and driven shafts by moving the fork in one direction, and when the fork is moved in the other direction, one of the members is brought into a position in which it positively engages both the driving and driven shafts. In the change-speed gear shown, four clutch engaging forks m-m<3> are preselectively connected to an operating bar n, operated from the main clutch pedal in the manner described in Specification 484,816.
