Abstract

458,053. Variable - speed gearing. SEMERY, J. M. C., 112<bis>, Rue Cardinet, Paris. Dec. 9, 1935, No. 34099. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1934. Addition to 423,986. [Class 80 (ii)] In a modification of the arrangement described in the parent Specification having a series of pinions 10, 11, 12 mounted free upon a driving or driven shaft and in constant mesh with a series of pinions 10<1>, 11<1>, 121 integral with an intermediate shaft 13, and a free-wheel device 14 for clamping either of the first series of pinions to its shaft together with a second free-wheel device 15 oppositely disposed with respect to the first so as to operate when the driven shaft tends to overrun the driving-shaft and enable the engine to be used as a brake, the two free-wheel devices 14, 15 are arranged in grooves in an auxiliary shaft 4 mounted rotatably with and slidably on the driving or driven shaft'2. The grooves comprising the free-wheel devices 14 and 15 are provided respectively with eccentric slopes 16 and 17 oppositely disposed and co-operating with clamping members such as rollers 18, 19. The auxiliary shaft 4 together with the free-wheel devices 14, 15 can thus be slid as a whole to engage either of the pinions 10, 11 or 12 for two indirect and one direct forward speeds respectively, the pinion 12 being integral with the driven shaft 3. A sliding clutch member 25 on a sleeve 21, on which the pinion 10 together with a pinion 22 is freely mounted, enables a neutral position and a reverse through the train 22, 23, 24, 12<1> and 12 to be obtained. In a modified arrangement (not shown), to obtain a reverse speed, a further pinion loose on the intermediate shaft is clutched thereto and drives through a reversing train one of the freely mounted pinions on the auxiliary shaft in a reverse direction, the braking free-wheel device being utilized to transmit the drive to the auxiliary shaft and thus to the driven shaft. In this arrangement also the intermediate pinion corresponding to the driving pinion on the auxiliary shaft is freed from its shaft by means of a further clutch member.
