Abstract

830,571. Clutches. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Dec. 10, 1957 [Jan. 8, 1957], No. 38358/57. Class 80 (2). A centrifugal clutch for coupling a driving drum 2 to a driven drum 5 and particularly for use in vehicles comprises a series of weights 9 each secured to one end of a spring 6 secured to the drum 2. The other end of each spring 6 supports an auxiliary shoe 11 pressed into engagement with the drum 5 by a light spring 13. This end of the spring 6 is inclined to a radius so that in one direction of relative rotation between the drums 2 and 5 it wedges to transmit a drive whilst in the other direction it merely rubs lightly on drum 5 and transmits negligible torque. Thus drum 2 rotating in the direction of the arrow only transmits torque through the centrifugal action of the weight 9 in proportion to the speed to the drum 5. If, however, the drum 5 tends to over-run the drum 2 or if the drum 5 drives whilst the drum 2 is stationary, the shoes 11 tend to wedge and transmit substantial torque. This provides for engine braking and a towed start in vehicles.
