Abstract

Fluid-pressure; energy-absorbing elements.- An automatic brake for preventing racing in marine engines comprises a brake drum 2 on the engine shaft having renewable rims 3 bolted thereto, brake levers 5 having renewable linings 4, and an actuating-piston 12 which is moved by steam pressure or vacuum when the control valve is opened by a speed governor 16. The valve 13 is connected to the steam pressure supply and the valve 14 to the condenser vacuum, and both valves may be actuated by the governor. The governor may be driven by chain and sprocket gearing, or in any other suitable manner. Springs are arranged at 6 to hold the brake off.
