Abstract

809,761. Fluid friction brakes. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 12, 1956, [Dec. 22, 1955 (2)], No. 37942/56. Class 103 (1). [Also in Groups XXIV and XXIX] In a torque-converter-driven change-speed gear on a vehicle (see Group XXIV), the vehicle can be braked by an hydrodynamic brake comprising vanes 173, carried by the output shaft 59 of the torque converter, co-operating with fixed vanes 176, 177, fluid being led to and from the brake by lines 180, 181 under control of a manual brake-control valve which, when operated, directs fluid pressure from a supply line to the brake feed line 180 and connects the previously vented exhaust line 181 to a cooler. Brake torque exceeds engine torque and its effect on the vehicle varies in accordance with the transmission ratio of the drive range selected in the gear.
