Abstract

1413430 Torque converter control; torque converters; clutches; hydrodynamic brakes VOITH GETRIEBE KG 4 May 1973 [6 May 1972 31 March 1973] 21343/73 Headings F2L F2C F2W and F2E A hydrodynamic torque converter which comprises a driving casing 11, connected by a friction clutch 23 to the impeller 12, is converted to a hydrodynamic brake for braking of the output shaft 20 (on which is mounted on turbine 13) by disengagement of clutch 23 and engagement of a brake 24 which brakes the impeller 12. A friction clutch 26 between the input casing 11 and the turbine 13 is also provided. The clutches 23, 26 and brake 24 are hydraulically operated, and brake 24 may be mounted within casing 11 so that a double-acting piston can operate both clutch 23 and the brake 24. The reactor 14 is mounted on a fixed shaft 19 via a freewheel 16. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the turbine is in two parts with a centripetal flow reactor between them, and in a further embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the reactor is in two parts. The friction clutch 26 may be supplemented or replaced by a freewheel device which prevents the output shaft 20 rotating faster than the input shaft so that engine braking is automatically utilized. The reactor blades may be adjustable. The brake pedal which operates the vehicle service brakes may cause the converter to function as a brake.
