Abstract
1382439 Hydrodynamic brakes DAIMLERBENZAG 7 Nov 1972 [11 Nov 1971] 51342/72 Heading F2E A four-speed-and-reverse automatic gearbox is followed on the driven side by a hydrodynamic retarder Pr, Sr, Fig. 1, as an additional brake system for the vehicle; the speed stages of the gearbox include freewheels which remain permanently in the effective position, even when the retarder is actuated. The engine driven shaft a, Fig. 1, drives through a torque converter W the gear train including planetary gear systems G1 to G3 for first to third speeds; Kv is a clutch for all the forward speeds, K 4 r is a clutch for the fourth forward and reverse speeds, Br is a brake for reverse speed, B 2 , B 3 are brakes for second and third speeds, and F 1 , F 2 and F 3 are freewheels associated with first, second and third speeds respectively. The retarder is switched on and off by filling and emptying its flow circuit, but extra control as below may be provided. In Fig. 2, the retarder R is controlled by a valve VR which is acted upon by the brake pedal b, the accelerator pedal g and a device d 1 which is indicative of engine speed; pedal g and device d 1 may control the retarder in such a way that the retarder is operative after delivery of torque has dropped to or below zero. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the engine speed device of Fig. 2, is replaced by a device which responds to the speed difference between the input and output shafts. Preferably, the braking force exerted by the retarder increases directly in proportion to backward movement of the accelerator pedal from a neutral position and also directly in proportion to the input-output speed difference. When the retarder is connected to the brake pedal, actuation of the retarder occurs before actuation of the main vehicle brake. The retarder may be controlled at least in part by the difference in speeds of the impeller P, Fig. 1, and turbine T of the torque converter W; or by the changeover from drive to over-run in the vehicle drive line; or by changes in the moment exerted by the engine on its mounting. Control by accelerator pedal or engine speed may be arranged to be effective only up to a specificed degree of retarder braking.
