Abstract
676,894. Hydromechanical variable-speed gear. BOWLES, C. V. Nov. 13, 1950 [Nov. 12, 1950; Nov. 4, 1950], Nos. 29040/49 and 26974/50. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXIX] Speeds varying automatically from zero or a fixed reduction up to one-to-one, under speed- and torque-responsive control, between an input sun 1 and output planet-carrier 5, are obtained by a throttled hydrostatic coupling comprising spring-loaded plungers 10 reciprocated in radial cylinders in a block secured to the output carrier 5, by tracking a surrounding eccentric 9 fast with a reaction ring-gear 6, which latter is also connected through a one-way clutch 7 to a brakedrum 8 which can be held to provide the initial fixed reduced speed and is subsequently overrun as the hydrostatic coupling. clutches together the ring and carrier. For all forward speeds a toothed wheel 27 axially slidable on a final parallel output shaft 26 is meshed with a wheel 25 fast with the planet-carrier 5, whilst for reverse, at fixed ratio, the wheel 25 is meshed with a wheel 24 fast with a ring-gear 6, the planet-carrier being then held by a brake 22. The outlets 'from the plunger-cylinders of the hydrostatic coupling are each controlled by an initially open valve 12 which, with speed increase, is allowed to spring-close by outward movement of a lever 15 carrying a spring-loaded centrifugal mass 18 slidable on a pivoted arm 19. Each plunger cylinder has its own valve and lever-control system, the valve loading springs being of different strengths to cause the valves to close successively with speed increase. A spring-loaded output-driven torque-screw, not shown, and manual means, may assist in the control. Automatic pressure relief-valves 28 also provide load-responsive control. The forward reaction brake 8 may be controlled by engine-speed responsive fluid-pressure to provide automatic drive engagement.
