899,451. Change-speed and clutch control. BERGHAUS, B. Dec. 23, 1959 [Dec. 23, 1958], No. 43720/59. Class 80 (2). A transmission comprises a steplessly variable gear and a main clutch and has a common control member which, when moved from a neutral position in which the clutch is disengaged and the gear is in its lowest ratio, first gradually engages the clutch and subsequently increases the gear ratio. As shown, the variable speed gearing is of the adjustable cone pulley type and drives through fixed reduction gearing the input shaft of a multi-plate clutch 6, the output shaft of which drives a machine 10. The fixed reduction gearing and the clutch 6 are immersed in an oil bath provided by a casing 4. A control pedal 7 actuates a cam slide 12 which is biased upwardly to the neutral position shown in which a pump 11 discharges through a valve 8 to exhaust. On moving pedal 7 downwardly a cam surface a increases the loading of valve 8 so that the pump pressure gradually increases The pump permanently supplies liquid to the clutch engaging servo, so that the clutch engaging pressure gradually increases. After full clutch engagement has been obtained, further depression of the pedal causes a cam surface b to actuate a follow-up servo-arrangement 9 controlling the output cone pulley so that the effective diameter is reduced. The input pulley automatically accommodates itself to the diameter of the output pulley.
