Abstract

947,948. Change-speed gearing. AUTO TRANSMISSIONS Ltd. Dec. 10, 1962 [Dec. 12, 1961], No. 44364/61. Heading F2D. A three-element epicyclic overdrive gear unit controlled by a clutch-brake member 24 operated by a fluid-pressure piston 31 has an auxiliary fluid-pressure piston 43 and an associated leakage orifice 42 for cushioning gear changing. The unit consists of a sun pinion 21 splined to member 24, planet pinion 18, carrier 17 and annulus 20, and as shown in the condition for direct drive member 24 is engaged with annulus 20 while piston 31 is cut off from a supply pump 37 by a control valve 36. For overdrive valve 36 is set to connect piston 31 with pump 37, the piston moving to the left to smoothly disengage member 24 from annulus 20 against loading springs 28, and then bearing against the fixed casing 34 to hold sun pinion 21. For direct drive valve 36 is turned to the position shown in which a pipe 40 connects the cylinders 38, 41 of pistons 31, 43. Under the action of springs 35, 38 piston 31 moves to the right and expels liquid from cylinder 38 to cylinder 41, from which it escapes through orifice 42, the piston 43 thus opposing springs 28 to give smooth engagement of member 24 with annulus 20.
