Abstract

1,104,250. Epicyclic gearing. J. PRODEL. 14 March, 1966 [31 Dec., 1965], No. 10991/66. Headings F2D and F2E. [Also in Division B3] An auxiliary drive unit for a machine tool table comprises a variable-speed hydraulic motor H driving the input shaft 23 of a threeelement epicyclic gear 25, the output shaft 27 of which is coupled directly to the feed screw, the gear unit being controlled by a disc clutch 35 and brake 38 including means to limit the engaging force during normal drive. As shown, the end of input shaft 23 is formed with a pinion 24 meshing pinion 34 of a stepped planet, the other portion 33 of which meshes an annulus 30. The planet carrier 31 carries the clutch 35 adjacent a plate 29 carrying the brake 38, an annular actuator 41a in an end plate 28 being supplied with pressure liquid through a pipe 28c. The gear is supplied by a pump unit (20, 21), Fig. 4 (not shown), and distributers (44, 45, 46) controlled by a programming unit (P), which for normal drive supplies liquid to the motor H but not to actuator 41a, shaft 27 being driven through the epicyclic train. Under these conditions clutch 35 is free and the engaging force of brake 38 is limited by loading springs 54a mounted between an axial bearing 57 and an end plate 60 connected to shaft 27 by a pin 61, the spring loading being adjustable by an axial screw 62. For high-speed running the programmer supplies liquid to motor H and actuator 41a so that plate 29 engages clutch 35 and the gear unit is locked solid for direct drive. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the brake loading springs are non- adjustable and are mounted adjacent the outer periphery of clutch 35.
