Abstract

722,194. Hydromechanical variable-speed gear. SVENSKA ROTOR MASKINER AKTIEBOLAG. Jan. 31, 1952 [Feb. 9, 1951], No. 2595/52. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXIX] In a power transmission device incorporating an hydraulic torque converter having a pump member 2, a turbine member 19-20, a direct drive clutch 7 between the pump and turbine members, a rotatably mounted reaction member 4, a reversing gear 5 providing connection between the reaction and turbine members, a friction clutch or braking device 6 for release or engagement of said gear so as to allow transmission of power alternatively in one' or other direction from the reaction member to the turbine member thereby enabling the converter to be used as an hydraulic brake, and a braking device 8 for the reaction member, the direct drive clutch 7, the clutch or braking device 6 of the reversing gear, and the brake 8 for the reaction member are independently engageable. When clutch 7 only is engaged, direct drive is established between the engine-driven shaft 9 and the turbine shaft 22. When the brake 8 only is engaged, the reaction member is secured to the stationary housing 27 and normal torque converter drive is obtained. When brake 6 only is engaged, the planet wheel carrier ring 26 of the reversing gear is secured to the housing 27 so that the reaction member rotates in a direction opposite to that of the pump and turbine and double rotation system converter drive is obtained. When clutch 7 and brake 8 are engaged together, direct drive with hydraulic braking due to the stationary reaction member is obtained. When clutch 7 and brake 6 are both engaged, direct drive is obtained with increased hydraulic braking due to the contra-rotating reaction member. When brakes 6 and 8 are engaged simultaneously, the turbine member is held stationary, thereby facilitating changing gear when a gear box is attached to the turbine shaft. In another embodiment the turbine member is provided with a " split torque " device for transmitting the torque from the engine simultaneously to the turbine member and to the output shaft. An alternative arrangement of reversing gear in which the planet wheels are bolted directly to the stationary casing and having a different brake arrangement is described.
