Abstract

553,210. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. VILLIERS, C. P. R. DE. Nov. 10, 1941, No. 14457. [Class 135] An internal combustion engine drives a load through a continuously variable speed gear, the gear changing means being responsive to the conjoint effect of engine speed and another function of engine power, the arrangement comprising a cam which transmits the speed effect and varies its magnitude with respect to the other effect according to a non-linear law representing the relationship of the effects which conduces to fuel economy. In the form shown in Fig. 1 comprising an engine 2 and a continuously variable hydraulic transmission, the speed ratio of which is variable by a lever 10, the lever is operated by a servomotor 12 supplied from the pipe 8 or 9 of the hydraulic transmission under the control of a valve 17 actuated by a floating lever 34. The position of the lever 34 during forward drive is determined by the pressure difference between the pipes 8, 9 representing the torque effect and acting through a plunger 26, and by the speed governor 37 acting through a cam 40. Movement of the lever 11 of the pump of the hydraulic transmission into neutral or reverse drive position sets a stop 48 to prevent the lever 34 from moving out of its low-gear position. The shape of the edge of the cam 40 is determined from a graph obtained experimentally according to prescribed directions. In another form, the pressure drop due to throttling, positions a piston 60, Fig. 4, working in a cylinder 59, the lefthand end of which is open to the atmosphere or connected by a pipe 64 to the high pressure side of the throttle valve 54, and the stop 48 is replaced by a cock 72 which puts the pipe 62 to atmosphere when the lever 11 is in neutral or reverse position. The throttle valve is actuated from a pedal 3 or governor 37 through a floating lever 56. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the lever 34 is acted on by the governor 37 and the movement of the engine controller, a collapsible link 76 including a weak spring 79 being interposed in the connections from the governor.
