Abstract

536,612. Fluid-pressure servomotors. DODSON, E. Aug. 12, 1940, No. 28404/39. [Class 135] A hydraulic servomotor comprising a doubleacting cylinder with floating lever follow-up control has a byepass conduit between the two ends of the cylinder controlled by a relief valve which is normally held closed by the pressure of the fluid supply but is biassed to open the conduit in the event of the said pressure failing. The relief valve comprises a piston valve 243 with an'annular groove adapted to form a transfer passage between ports 240, 241 in a liner 239 leading through passages 236, 237 to the opposite sides of the power piston 12. The valve is normally held in the closed position against the action of a spring 251 by the pressure of the motivefluid acting on the top of the valve member. The power piston is controlled by a piston valve 14 working in a ported liner and coupled to an intermediate point of a floating lever 15. One end of this lever is coupled by a link 17 to the power pistons and to the element operated, for example the throttle of an internal combustion engine on an aircraft, while the other end is coupled to a hand control. In the event of the motive fluid supply failing the valve is moved so that it either engages a stop 34 or the nut 35 engages the end of the liner whereafter the floating lever mechanically operates the controlled elements, the relief valve permitting the free movement of the piston.
