Abstract

534,986. Fluid-pressure servomotors. DODSON, E. Jan. 3, 1940, No. 158. [Class 135] A fluid-pressure servomotor which is described for controlling the throttle valve of an internal combustion engine more particularly for an aero engine is constructed so that if the pressure fluid system breaks down, or if the engine is stopped, the throttle valve of the engine will be moved into an open position suitable for starting. The piston 11 of the servomotor is connected by a rod 21 to a sliding fitting 22 which controls the position of the engine throttle. The piston 11 is controlled by a slide valve 12 which controls the supply of pressure oil from pipes- 17, 18, to and from the cylinder 10 of the servomotor. The valve 12 is controlled by mechanism as described in Specification 483,049 in which air pressure acts on a diaphragm 20 connected to the top of the valve, and a follow-up mechanism acting on a diaphragm 36 connected to the lower end of the valve 12 comprises a lever 13 connected to the fitting 22 and an adjustable link 16 and spring. When the engine is stopped,. or if the pipe lines 17, 18 are broken, a spring 23 will raise a rod 25 fitted with an abutment collar 26, which raises the lever. 13 to a position corresponding to the open position of the throttle, by acting on a slotted pin 28 mounted in a bulge 24 in the lever 13. The rod 25 normally opposes the downward movement of the rod 21 when its reaches its low position.
