Abstract

550,428. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd.. and MORRIS, P. D. July 23, 1941, No. 9322. [Class 135] Supercharger control mechanism comprises a primary relay consisting of an element responsive to absolute boost pressure, a pilot valve and servomotor, and a secondary relay consisting of a pilot valve and main servomotor, the secondary relay being influenced by the primary relay and also by a centrifugal governor driven by the supercharger. In the form shown, the pressure sensitive element consists of bellows 7, 71 separated by a member 8 acted on by a spring 9, the bellows 7 being subject internally to the boost pressure, and the bellows 71 being evacuated When the boost pressure falls, the sensitive element acts through a lever 10 to cause a sleeve 11 to diminish leakage from below a piston 45, a pilot valve 38 thus being lifted to cause raising of the piston and rod 14 in the servomotor 3. Rack and pinion gear is thus operated to cause resetting of the sensitive element and the valve 38 through a cam 34 and lever 39, and the lifting of the left hand end of a lever 16 through a cam 15. The movement of the lever 16 sets a valve sleeve 22 to admit oil to a cylinder 6 to depress a piston 23 and partially close a valve 35 so as to increase the speed of the exhaust gas turbine 35<SP>1</SP> driving the supercharger. The supply of oil to the cylinder 6 is cut off by the action of a speed governor 4 driven by the supercharger on a valve 21, and by an incline 33 on the piston rod 24 acting through a bellcrank lever 30 on the lever 16 and sleeve 22. Should the supply of operating oil fail, a piston 27 is raised by compression springs in order to open a valve 28 to permit communication between the chambers on opposite sides of the piston 23 and finally to raise the piston and its rod 24 to the maximum extent. Setting of the boost pressure to a desired value is effected by adjusting the position of the fulcrum 12 of the lever 10, and the limitation of supercharger speed above the critical altitude is effected by the speed governor 4 acting to open the valve 35.
