Abstract
561,024. Jacks. HURST, W. F. F. MARTIN-, and BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. Oct. 16, 1942, No. 14524. [Class 78 (iii)] An electrically controlled fluid pressure operated jack comprises a telescopic ram 3, 4 normally extended by a spring 14. Fig. 2 shows a form adapted for pneumatic operation; in which the admission and exhaust valves 35, 32 are controlled by a spring-biassed magnetic core 22 influenced by a solenoid coil 20. The admission plug 33 connects by a duct 34, valve passage 35, duct 37 and annular chamber 38 to a passage 12 around the cylinder 6 and a port 13 leading into the cylinder below the piston 7. When the pull is completed, the solenoid is de-energized so that the spring 23 can move the core 22 to close valve 35 and open valve 32. The air then escapes by way of port 13, passage 12, annulus 38, duct 37, valve duct 31 and orifice 42 to the atmosphere. In a form for hydraulic operation, the core 22 slides a piston valve in its ported'sheath to connect the cylinder 6 either with the admission plug 33 or with a radial exhaust nozzle. The jack is stated to be applicable to the actuation of a two-speed supercharger for an aircraft engine, under the control of an altitude or like operated switch. In both forms the spring abutments and the location of port 13 may be such as to make the collapsed disposition the normal one.
