Abstract

664,810. Fluid-pressure servomotor control systems. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. July 19, 1949 [Aug. 11, 1948], No. 18976/49. Class 135 A steam turbine having a valve controlled by a fluidpressure servomotor to regulate the flow of steam to the turbine in accordance with its speed includes a speed governor 9, Fig. 2, an emergency overspeed governor 10 and a steam chest 12 for the admission valve 28 and the servomotor. The servomotor comprises differential pistons 42, 44 slidable in a cylinder 26 surrounded by a sleeve 25 leaving a space 53 therebetween through which passes inlet steam to the face 51 of the piston 44. The piston 42 is integral with the valve 28 and a stem 46 which abuts the piston 44, whilst the piston 44 has an axial bore 58 controlled by a needle valve 60 operatively connected to the governor 9 by a spring 72 and a lever 69 to permit the escape of steam from the face 51 through the bore 58 and a passage 58b to atmosphere. On, e.g. a decrease in turbine speed due to increased load, the lever 69 turns anti-clockwise so that the valve 60 opens and releases the pressure on the piston 44 to exhaust and the now unbalanced pressure on the left face of the piston 42 moves the piston assembly to the right to follow-up the movement of the valve 60 and open the valve 28 until the forces on the pistons 42, 44 are again equal. In the event of overspeeding of the turbine, the governor 10 acts through a lever and spring '(not shown) to disengage a cam piece 79 from a spring- loaded cup member 74 which, when released, engages a collar 84 to move the valve 60 to close the bore 58 and hence move the piston assembly to the left to close the valve 28. To reset the overspeed governor after use a lever 85 is provided.
