Abstract
657,926. Steam turbines. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 17, 1949, No. 13118. Convention date, June 18, 1948. [Class 110(iii)] Manual regulation of a steam-turbine and emergency stopping of the turbine at excessive speed or failure of the lubricating oil pressure are effected by a single set of four valves 29. The valves control the flow of steam from the chest 20 to the nozzle segments 28. The valves 29 have stems 31 of different lengths so that they are opened in sequence as the lifting plate 33'is raised. The plate is raised by a hand-operated gear 46 and a lever 37. The lever is pivoted between a stop 40 and the end of a rod 39 attached to a piston 48 which is kept in the position shown by pressure oil in a cylinder 49. The oil is supplied to the cylinder through two piston valves 53, 54. If the engine speed is excessive. as measured by a pump 56, the piston 53 rises. If the pressure of the lubricating oil fails the piston 54 falls. These movements shut off the pressure oil from the cylinder 49 and open the cylinder to waste. Downward movement of the rod 39 permits the valves 29 to close due to the weight of the parts 33 and 37.
