Abstract

277,315. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Warner, D. F.). Sept. 13, 1926, [Convention date]. Fluid relays.-The admission valve 6 of an elastic fluid turbine is controlled by a governor B driven by the turbine shaft which also drives an oil pump 21 supplying pressure oil through a main pipe 24 to the underside of a spring pressed piston 13 operating the valve 6. Oil in the pipe 24 is kept, at a constant pressure by the setting of a relief valve 25 but the pipe 24 has a main branch 28, and a bye-pass 29 opened by the governor B to vary the pressure in the pipe 28 and so alter the admission valve opening. The bye-pass 29 can supply oil to a sleeve 32 the ports of which are uncovered by downward movement of the pilot valve 36 by the governor and are further uncovered by raising the sleeve itself by a lever 34 connected to a bellows 40 supplied with pressure oil from the flexible pipe 47 to balance the thrust of spring 49. A follow up is provided by connecting the bellows casing to the piston rod 12 so that when it moves up to open the throttle valve 6 it raises the left hand end of lever 34 and it raises the sleeve 32 to damp down the oil bye-pass effect. In a modification the bellows 40 may be replaced by a spring pressure piston. Specifications 173,086; 229,321, [Class 135, Valves, &c.]; and 229,325 are referred to.
