Abstract

259,991. British Thomson-Houston Co, Ltd., (Assignees of Dickinson, E. D., and Standerwick, R. G.). Oct. 16, 1925, [Convention date]. Fluid governors.-In a prime-mover wherein the same oil pump is used for the oil governor and for the lubricating system the adjustable bye-pass for the governor oil system and the pressure relief valve for the lubricating system are in manipulative combination. A turbine 1 drives an oil pump 26, the pressure in the delivery pipe 28, therefrom, varying as the turbine speed. The pipe 28 communicates with the underside of a governor piston 17, upward and downward movements of which operate the pilot valve 12 and servo-motor piston 7 to control the fluid supply to the turbine and thus decrease or increase the speed thereof. A bye-pass 29 from the pipe 28 leads to a valve-box 30 having compartments 36, 37, 38, Fig. 2, which intercommunicate by passages 39, 40 controlled by valves 41, 44 respectively. The valve 41 is fixed to the screwed rod 42; the valve 44 is slidable on the rod 42 and is loaded by a spring 47 which also bears on a nut 45 fixed on the rod 42. The oil in the chamber 37 is thus kept at constant pressure and is led by a pipe 48 to a valve-box 49 and pipes 50 to the turbine bearings. Excess of oil passes the valve 44 and is led from the chamber 38 by a discharge pipe 52 to the oil tank 53. Variation of turbine speed is obtained by moving the valve 41 to vary the oil pressure in the chamber 36. The pressure in the chamber 37, however, always remains constant, due to the nut 45 moving with the rod 42 to allow for the variation in the amount of oil passing the valve 44.
