Pressure fluid is supplied under pistons I - - V by a pump n and the pressure at the pistons is determined by the leakage into a return pipe 2 permitted by a piston valve VII. When the piston valve is moved to the left to throttle the outlet from the pipe p the pressure in that pipe rises and since the bladings on the pistons are suitably differentiated the valves b, c, d can be caused to open in succession. When the piston valve is moved to the right the valves i, k are similarly operated. A quick closing valve s in front of the nozzle valves is normally held open by the fluid pressure and closes when the pressure fails by reason of the operation of emergency devices t, u or a hand-controlled valve 3. The valve 3 may be operatively connected with the piston valve VII. Separate pistons valves may be provided to control the valves of the ahead and astern turbines respectively.
