Abstract

799,580. Elastic fluid turbines. LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS-GES. March 3, 1955 [March 3, 1954], No. 6289/55. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXIX] The admission valves of an elastic fluid turbine are regulated by a servo-mechanism under the control of an hydraulic control means which includes a control valve operated by a speed governor and supplied with oil under constant pressure by a pipe fitted with a pressure regulating valve. In an embodiment, pressure oil is supplied past a restriction 17, Fig. 1, to the pressure-regulating valve 16 consisting of a differential piston 19, 21 oppositely loaded by springs 20, 22 of which spring 22 can be adjusted by a handwheel 24. In the stop position of the turbine, as shown, the pressure oil is blocked by land 19. To start the turbine, spring 22 is adjusted to raise piston 19, 21, and the pressure oil then flows through line 18, past a centrifugal governor-actuated shuttle control valve 3 which, with the governor at rest, will be in its upper limiting position, and through a line 4 to the upper side of a spring-loaded piston 6. The resultant lowering of piston 6 closes a valve 7 on to its seat on a spring-pressed piston 9 and thus closes off the escape passage for pressure oil which is being supplied to the chamber situated above piston 9. Pressure will thus build up above the piston and the latter will be lowered, taking with it a floating lever 10 and thus actuating the main control valve 11 of a rotary vane servomotor 12. The shaft of the latter is connected to the regulating valves of the turbine, and the movement of the vane is also fed back to valve 11 through a cam 14 and the floating lever 10 in order to recentre the valve. After the turbine has started, the centrifugal governor 1 acts on shuttle valve 3 and takes over control of servomotor 12. Adjustment of spring 22 by handwheel 24 varies the pressure of the motive fluid used in the control system and so sets the datum speed for the turbine. The lower edge of land 19 acts as the valve regulating the pressure of the oil supplied by line 15 and, in a modification giving finer control, the edge 27, Fig. 2, is sharpened and serrated.
