Abstract

377,092. Turbines. HOLZWARTH, H., 7, Goethestrasse, Dusseldorf, Germany. Jan. 1, 1932, No. 106. Convention date, Jan. 2, 1931. [Class 110 (iii).] In an explosion turbine plant the volume of charging air delivered by the compressor per unit of time, measured in the condition of delivery to the combustion chambers, is kept constant over the range of regulation, the pressure of the charging air being altered while the number of explosion chambers and the number of working cycles is kept constant. The speed of a steam turbine 6 which drives a compressor 5 is altered in accordance with the fluctuations in the speed of the explosion turbine 1. When the output of a generator 4, driven by the turbine 1 and the continuous flow turbine 2, falls below normal, the excess of air delivered by the compressor 5 to the turbine 1 is led to the turbine 2. Steam raised from waste heat of the exhaust gases is used to drive the turbine 6. Steam enters a pipe 10 and passes by way of a valve 11 and pipe 12 to the turbine 6. Valve 11 is controlled in accordance with the fluctuations in speed of the explosion turbine 1 by means of a regulating rod 13 of the speed governor 14. The rod 13 is connected to a slide valve 15, of a servomotor 16, which admits or releases fluid to or from the upper side of a piston 17 supported by a spring. A valve 20 of a fuel pump 8 is under the influence of the charging air by way of a pipe 21 and a piston 22 so that independently of the alterations in the condition of the charging air, the specific heat content of the charges to be supplied to the explosion chamber of turbine 1 can be adjusted to be constant. A second steam inlet pipe 37 admits steam to the turbine 6 when the valve 11 is partially closed by way of a valve 38 under control of a piston 32 which is balanced between steam pressure in the pipe 37 and that of a spring 33. Excess air from the compressor 5 is led from the pipe 7 to the continuous flow turbine 2 by way of a valve 23 controlled by a piston 25 through an angle lever 24. A sleeve 36, clamped to the rod 13, controls the admission to or release from the slide valve 26 of fluid which acts on the piston 25 to open the valve 23. A pipe 30 admits air under pressure from the pipe 7 to act under a piston 29 to restore the position of the slide valve 26.
