Abstract

419,004. Fuel pumps. HOLZWARTH, H., 7, Goethestrasse, D³sseldorf, Germany. May 9, 1933, No. 13491. Convention date, May 9, 1932. [Class 102 (i).] In apparatus for injecting liquid fuel into an explosion chamber, particularly for gas turbines, of the type in which the fuel-pump plunger is oil-actuated, the duration of an injection of fuel is reguated by varying the pressure of the actuating or control oil. The variation may be effected manually, or through a governoroperated servomotor, and the governor may determine the quantity of fuel supplied by controlling the opening of a fuel byepass valve. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, the fuelpump plunger 17, which sucks in fuel through a pipe 20, and delivers it by a pipe 21 to the combustion chamber, is actuated by a differential piston 13, 14. Actuating oil for this piston is supplied by an electrically-driven pump 35, and the alternating supply of this oil through the passages 4, 11, to the spaces 45, 44 is controlled by a floating, double-ended, piston-like member 38, 39. This member is actuated by oil from a chamber W which is fed by a pump 7, and the supply from which is controlled by a rotary distributing valve 0 which is rotated by the electric motor 1. The movement of the member 38, 39 is limited by an adjustable abutment 26 which determines the throttle space 61 through which the actuating oil for the plunger piston 13, 14, passes, and so determines the duration of the stroke. Modifications are described in which the member 38, 39 is dispensed with, the variation of the pressure of the actuating oil being effected by throttling either the pump pipe 6 or the supply pipe 12, or by adjusting the load on a piston in the oil system. The byepass valve 47 which determines the quantity of fuel delivered at each stroke of the plunger 17 is actuated by a roller 24 on a lever 22 which is pivoted at one end on the plunger 17, and at the other on an adjustable member 82. This member is adjusted by an oil-actuated servomotor 77 in accordance with variations in speed of the turbine. Automatic regulation.- Fig. 11 shows a gas turbine plant in which the supply of fuel by the pump J to the combustion chamber A is controlled automatically by a speed governor S driven by the turbine V. The governor varies the pressure in an oil pipe-line 72 which is connected to the quantity-measuring device 77 which operates as described above. This pressure oil is also used to adjust the abutment which limits the movement of the throttling member 38, 39. The servomotor for this purpose comprises a doubleended piston 85, Fig. 13, adapted to be actuated by oil introduced at 86, from the pump 35, and a centrally arranged pilot-valve 87 actuated by a piston 87<a> which is influenced by a spring 88 and by oil in the pipe line 72, the pressure of which is under governor control. In the plant shown, the distributing valve 0 controls also the air-admission valve B and the products-discharge valve D. The compressor N may be driven by a steam turbine R, and the varying pressure in the oil pipe 72 may be used to control the inlet valve of the turbine, or a valve in the suction pipe of the compressor. The products of combustion may be used in a heat-exchanger or other device instead of in a turbine. Specification 377,092, [Group XXVI], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the description of arrangements in which the governor controls a throttle valve in the inlet to the air compressor, or a throttle valve in the supply pipe to the steam turbine driving the air compressor. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
