Abstract
525,550. Gas turbines. JENDRASSIK, G. Dec. 22, 1938, No. 37346. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1937. [Class 110 (iii)] A gas turbine plant in which the combustion air is heated by the exhaust gases from the turbine is controlled by varying the inlet temperature of the working fluid and the amount of air passing through the heat exchanger in the same sense as the variation in the lead. The variation of the heat supply is temporarily in excess of that required for normal operation and in the case of sufficiently diminished loads the transfer of heat in the heat exchanger is also over-reduced temporarily. The air from the compressor 1 passes through a heat exchanger 16 before passing to the combustion chamber 24 and the turbine 10. Should the load on the plant fall, the governor 7 will speed up, the rod 45 will be lowered and the fuel supply reduced to a minimum. When the arm 33 reaches the stop 38, the spring 36 will be compressed and the head 37 of the draw-bar 32 will contact the end of the lever 40 and open the valve 42. Since the heat exchanger 16 acts as a heat accumulator the amount of air byepassed will temporarily exceed the normal quantity for the new load condition, but as the exchanger cools down the governor closes down the valve 42 to permit the exchanger to reach its new steady condition... The byepass may be dispensed with and the amount of air passing through the heat exchanger controlled by one or more of the valves 47, 48 and 49, or by having adjustable guide vanes fitted to the air compressor. A valve 50 may be used to control the air supply to the combustion chamber 24 and a thermostat 51 may be fitted to limit the inlet temperature of the gas turbine.
