Abstract

540,738. Starting oil engines. THORNYCROFT & CO., J. L, and DACK, W. S. April 26, 1940, No. 7527. [Class 7 (iii)] In means for facilitating starting in which the fuel pump 3 is controlled by a pneumatic governor 2, and the pump control member 11 is provided with a movable stop 24 connected to the throttle mechanism so as to allow an excess quantity of fuel to be supplied for starting when the throttle pedal or lever 18 is released, while limiting the fuel supply to that required for normal full load when the throttle is opened, a separate valve 33 is opened to admit air for starting, by means of a hand control 36, but is automatically closed as the throttle is opened, by an abutment 20 contacting with the arm 35, or the valve 33 may be closed by the pressure. of the lubricating oil, or by a thermostat. The position of the stop 24, throttle 17, and pedal 18 for starting is that shown in full lines, the stop 24 being in its extreme ,left-hand position, allowing the control rod 11 to move to its maximum amount. As the throttle is opened, the stop 24 is moved towards the right to reduce the maximum fuel supply allowable. The pneumatic governor 2 is controlled by a connection 8 to a Venturi 16. around the throttle 17. In a modification, air for starting may be admitted by the throttle 17, a lost-motion connection being provided between the throttle and the stop 24, which is automatically taken up by a thermostat, a solenoid, or by oil pressure. The stop 24 may be of stepped or tapered form and arranged at right-angles to the control rod 11.
