Abstract

424,184. Starting. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. Nov. 26, 1934, No. 33956. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1933. [Class 7 (v)] In an arrangement for controlling the operation of a marine Diesel engine, the fuel and starting-air supplies are controlled by a common member f, so that the engine can be set to operate either on compressed air or fuel, but the supply of starting air can be controlled independently of the fuel supply in order to supplement the charge by compressed air without interfering with the setting of the fuel control. As shown, the rod e of the starting-air valve carries a tappet roller c movable into or out of the range of forward and reverse starting cams a, b by means of a lever h, which is normally coupled by a catch k to the lever f. In the " stopping " and " starting " positions St, A of the lever f, the suction valve of the fuel pump is held open. In the " normal running" position B, the suction valve is released and the roller c is out of the range of the cams a, b, but can be brought into the operative position by means of the lever h upon releasing the catch k.
