Abstract

412,231. Variable - speed gearing. DAIMLER CO., Ltd., POMEROY, L. H., SIMPSON, C. M., and SHELLARD, S. H., Daimler Works, Coventry. Dec. 22, 1932, No. 36293. [Class 80 (ii).] In gearing of the kind comprising epicyclic trains, which are braked to give the various ratios, in combination with a hydraulic coupling the top gear drive is obtained by clutching the sun pinion or the annulus of the last group of gears direct to the primary member of the hydraulic coupling. The sun pinion 11 is connected to the disc 9 which is connected by sliding dogs 6, 7, to a sleeve 3 which carries the inner cone member 13, 14, which engages the outer cone 15 on the primary member 16 of the hydraulic coupling. A spring 17 normally holds the clutch out of engagement the operation of the clutch being effected by a spiral groove 23 on a collar 22, longitudinal movement of the cone 14 being obtained on rotating this collar. The top gear drive is thus obtained partly from the primary member of the coupling through the gear trains and partly from the runner 2 of the coupling through the sun gears 1 which reduces the top gear slip. In the Fig. shown, brakes on the drums A, B and C provide three gears in addition to the top gear. When only two other gears C and B are provided the annulus B is clutched to the primary member of the coupling to give the top gear.
