Abstract

351,931. Change-speed gearing for locomotives and motor vehicles. DYRENKOV, N. 1., 108, Ul Krasnoge, Odessa, Russia. Feb. 26, 1930, No. 6415. [Class 79 (ii).] Comprises a variable speed and reverse gear adapted to be mounted on or removed from the axle of a motor-driven locomotive without removing the axle from under the locomotive or the wheels from the axle, in which the gears are constantly in mesh to prevent breakage of teeth when changing gears and the weight of the gear box is evenly balanced on the axle and does not hang heavily on any other parts of the mech. anism or on the driving shaft. A worm wheel 1, Figs. 2 and 6, made in two halves split on a diagonal line, is bolted and keyed to the axle 5 as shown, and engages with a worm shaft 17, 18 carried by partitions 20, 20<1> in the gear box 14. An intermediate shaft 33, 33<1>, Fig. 1, runs parallel to the worm shaft and in line with a driving shaft 55 connected by a universal coupling, not shown, to the engine shaft. The weight of the parts rests mainly on the worm wheel but the gear box is held in position by a fork 76 secured to one end and bolted by bolt holes 78 to the frame or clutch housing of the locomotive. Sliding jaw clutches 64, 42 are mounted on splined portions of the shaft 33, 33<1> for changing speed and for reverse drive respectively. When the clutch 64 is moved to the left, direct drive from the shaft 55 to the shaft 33<1>, 33 is effected. When it is moved to the right, drive at reduced speed is effected through the gears 54, 72, 62, 61. When the clutch 42 is moved to the left, forward drive is transmitted from the shaft 33<1>, 33 to the worm shaft 18 through the intermediary of gears 37, 21. When it is moved to the right, reverse drive is transmitted through the gears 38, 49, 22. As the gears are constantly in mesh, they may be of noiseless spiral or herring-bone form. Access to the three compartments of the gear box, which may be filled with oil, is effected through openings 74 closed by covers 75.
