Abstract
431,897. Motor-vehicle driving-gear. TENNANT, W. J., 111, Hatton Garden, London.-(Tatra Works, Ltd. Motor Car & Railway Carriage & Wagon Builders; 200, Kartouzska, Smichov, Prague) Oct. 4, 1934, No. 28443. [Class 79 (ii)] In a motor vehicle in which an engine mounted on a pivoted underframe drives two axles, an auxiliary change-speed gear is provided between the usual main change-speed gear and the shaft driving the two axles. The vehicle is of the kind described in Specification 427,309. In the construction shown, the main changespeed gear I is driven from the engine 1 through a clutch 2 and a shaft 3. The drive is transmitted from the gear-box I to a shaft 8 driving the axles by means of a hollow shaft 5 and the auxiliary gear II comprising gear wheels 6 fixed on the shaft 5 and gear wheels 7 loosely mounted on the shaft 8 to which they can be clutched as desired. The gears 6, 7 may engage directly or may be connected by silent chains. The direct drive clutch 19 between the shafts 3, 5 is preferably, as shown, situated on the engine side of the auxiliary gearing, so that when this clutch is in use only a short part of shaft 3 is under stress. The main gearbox I preferably comprises four forward speeds and a reverse, and its shafts are extended as at 17, 18 to drive auxiliary machines such as cable winches. The shaft 8 drives the axles through differential gears 9 and bevel gears 13-16. Brake drums 10 are provided on the ends of the shaft 8.
