Abstract

142,120. Automobile Boat Manufacturing Co., (Assignees of Mazzei, W. C.). Feb. 28, 1914, [Convention date]. Boats adapted to run on land.-A motor vehicle or boat adapted to travel on land or water has a buoyant boatshaped body fitted with watertight doors and is propelled upon land and water from the same source of power, while the wheels have special watertight spring supports and are mounted in recesses in the hull so as to minimise resistance to travel through water. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the drive from the engine. is transmitted through a friction clutch 37 and gear shaft 43 to either a shaft 44 or 45 connected by universal joints with shafts 40, 42 driving the propeller or rear wheels respectively. By the operation of a handle 50, the pinion 47 is moved into engagement with a pinion 43<c> to obtain a direct drive for the propeller the reverse drive being obtained by the engagement 'of a pinion 46 with an idler wheel 49 driven by the pinion 51. A three-speed gear for the rear wheels comprises pinions 52, 53, 54 slidable on the shaft 43 and adapted to gear with pinions 55, 56, 57 on the shaft 45, a reverse drive being obtained when the pinion 58 gears with the idler wheel 49. A lever 60 operates an emergency brake. The front wheels 4, Fig. 5, are mounted on stub axles, a short screwed stud 10 engaging a tubular member 11 which encloses a spring 13 and has a vertical sliding movement in a sleeve 14. The upper end of the spring rests against a shoulder of a spindle 15 which has an adjusting screw 19 at its upper end supporting the body part 1. The axle of the rear wheels, Fig. 7, extends through the hull or body of the vehicle. It is mounted in side cylindrical members 26 enclosed in members 24 which are adapted to slide in guides 20 and are attached to the under sides of springs 33. Bearing blocks 32 are arranged between the upper sides of these springs and cross pieces 22 of the members 20. Packing members prevent the access of water. The steering mechanism comprises a hand wheel 62a, Fig. 2, with a sleeve 65 carrying a pulley 67 on which are wound ropes 67a controlling the rudder. The sleeve 65 can be depressed by the operation of a lever 76<a> engaging a cam slot to bring the toothed end 66 into engagement with a sleeve 64. Rotation by the steering wheel then operates the front wheels for steering purposes through connecting links 63a, 63b, 63<c>. For travelling on water, reverse movement of the lever 70<a> disconnects the rear wheel steering mechanism.
