Abstract

610,501. Motor-vehicle transmission gear. SPENCE, W. L. April 9, 1946, No. 10824. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] A land or road vehicle comprises a serieswound dynamo in series with two half-powered series-wound motors for powering the front, steering or subsidiary wheels of the vehicle, the dynamo being driven through the same changespeed gear-box as are the main or rear wheels. The motors may be housed in a cylindrical frame or shell, integral with the stub axle, with epicyclic transmission gearing housed between and carried by the motor end frame and the wheel hub cap. In the stub axle unit shown, the motor is housed in a shell A whilst the motor shaft D has integral with it a pinion P which drives planetary gears E which engages with an internal spur gearing C3 on the motor end frame C rigidly fastened by means of a ring plate B to the motor shell A. The epicyclic gearing is described in Specification 594,190, [Group XXXIII]. Thus, the planetary ring rotates carrying integral gear-wheels E and F. The gear F drives the internal spur gearing on the hub end G fastened on to the hub ring H rotatably mounted over the shell A. The steering pin housing forms a part of the motor shell A to which is also fastened a steering arm. By fastening the wheel hub on either side of either flange J or J1 on the hub ring H, the vehicle track can be varied.
