Abstract

619,931. Driving and steering wheels for vehicles. LEVERSTART, Ltd., and SWEET, C. W. Dec. 23, 1946, No. 37762. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (v)] A driving and steering mechanism for two road wheels of a vehicle comprises a hollow member mounted in a bearing carried by said vehicle so as to rotate about an upright axis, the two road wheels being provided with coaxial shafts rotatable in bearings carried by said hollow member, an upright driving shaft mounted in a separate bearing coaxial with the first bearing, a differential gear in the hollow member connecting the driving shaft to the wheel shafts and a gear track on the hollow member engaged by a gear-wheel associated with a steering mechanism. As shown in Fig. 1, a tubular bearing member 11 is secured to the vehicle frame 10. The hollow member 14 is rotatably mounted thereon and may be rotated by bevel gearing 19, 20 connected to the steering mechanism. The casing 14 is retained on the member 11 by studs 17 riding in a groove 18. Carried in bearings 30, 31 at the bottom of the casing 14 are the wheelcarrying shafts 32, 33 which carry respectively bevel gear-wheels 34, 39 gearing with the output shaft 27 and output tube 28 of the differential gear. The planet carrier 23 of the differential is driven by the upright driving shaft 22. In a different arrangement, Fig. 2, a bevel gear 45 on the driving shaft 22 meshes with a crownwheel 46 of the differential gear, the two wheelcarrying output shafts 32, 33 being driven by sun-wheels 49, 50. In this arrangement a hollow casing 41, corresponding to the member 14 in Fig. 1 for rotating the driven shafts about an upright axis, is within the bearing member 11 which is secured to the carriage 10 as before and the casing 41 is rotated by an integral worm-wheel 43 meshing with a worm 44 connected to the steering mechanism. In either arrangement the bevel pinion 20 or the worm 44 may be connected by a flexible shaft or suitable gear-connected shafts to a non- reversible gear forming a part of the steering mechanism, for example a worm and wormwheel having a 5 degrees lead angle. A transversely arranged motor-driven shaft may be connected by bevel gearing with the shaft 22.
