Abstract

326,868. Guy, S. S. Dec. 20, 1928. Driving steering- wheels; transmission gear between separate axles.-In vehicles of the kind having each front road wheel driven from a transverse shaft d by a longitudinal shaft b running alongside the main frame c at each side of the vehicle, the steering pivot being outside the central plane of the wheel and the swivelling axle being carried by a main front axle, each front wheel is driven from the corresponding longitudinal shaft by a short universally-jointed shaft f either through externally-toothed spur or skew gear f<1>, a<1>, Fig. 1, or directly as shown in Fig. 6, the shaft f in the latter case passing through the hollow swivelling axle a<2>. In the direct drive the shaft f is secured to a plate f<5> bolted to the wheel hub. The longitudinal shafts b drive the shafts f through bevel or worm gearing b' enclosed in a casing i which may be secured to the main frame c as shown in Fig. 6 or may be mounted on the dead axle g. The shaft f is universally jointed, and one joint may be coaxial with the steering pivot as shown or the pivot may be between the two joints.
