Abstract
654,589. Motor-vehicle driving gearing. POBJOY, E. E., (Representative of POBJOY, D. R.). March 8, 1948, No. 7031. [Class 79 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A transmission system for agricultural tractors comprises a variable speed gear having parallel input and output shafts 14, 15 with a reverse lay shaft 9, the output shaft 15 driving, through a bevel differential gear 23, half-shafts 26 which are pivoted with brake drums 42 and which drive the half-axles 34 through spur reduction gears 31, 40. The variablespeed gear is arranged in a casing 10 formed with rearwardly extending webs 18, 19, 20, 21 supporting the differential and the half-shafts 26, and a casing 12 housing the reduction gearing and supporting the inner ends of the half-axles 34 is bolted to the casing 10. Half-axle casings 13 are secured to the casing 12, extensions 43 of the casings 13 forming, with covers 44, housings for the brake drums 42. Correct meshing of the bevel pinion 17 on the rear end of the shaft 15 with the differential bevel wheel 25 is ensured by an adjustable ball thrust bearing 46 at the forward end of the shaft 15. A take-off shaft 52 carries a slidable gear 53 co-operating with a gear on the shaft 14.
