Abstract
774,348. Motor vehicle driving gear. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. June 30, 1955 [July 2, 1954], No. 18958/55. Classes 79(2), 79(3) and 79(5). A longitudinal transmission shaft 10 driving a change-speed gear 13 crosses underneath axle gearing which drives transverse axle shafts 36, 37, and a driven shaft 19 of the gear 13 extending parallel to the shaft 10 drives the axle gearing through bevel gears 24, 25, an intermediate shaft 26 and gears 30, 31, the shaft 26 being arranged higher than the shaft 10 and lower than the axis of the axle gearing. The axle gearing may comprise a differential gear of the locking or limited slip type. As shown the invention is applied to a vehicle having a forwardly disposed engine driving the rear axle. The shafts 36, 37 are connected by universal joints 38, 39 to wheel driving shafts 40, 41 and carry brake drums 42, 43. The change speed gear casing 22 and final drive housing 29 may be formed as a single casting, and the gears 24, 25 may be disposed in a removable cover 44.
