Abstract
1295837 Motor vehicle transmission HARRY FERGUSON RESEARCH Ltd 13 Jan 1970 [8 Feb 1969] 6941/69 Heading B7H A motor vehicle transmission comprises road wheels 10, 11, separate final drive units 14, 15 each carrying one of the road wheels and a transmission unit 18 having two outputs spaced transversely of the vehicle and in driving connection with the final drive units, the unit including an interwheel differential gear the input of which is in driving connection with the input of the transmission unit and the output of which is in driving connection by way of chain drives 24, 25 with the outputs of the unit 18. The transmission may be applied to a racing car, saloon car and commerical and military vehicles. As applied to a rear wheel wheel drive, independently suspended wheels 10, 11 carried by final drive units 14, 15 are driven by an engine 16 through a clutch and change speed gear within a casing, the interwheel differential, chain drives 24, 25 splined output shafts 22 and 23 and universally jointed shafts 26 and 27. As applied to a four wheel drive vehicle universally jointed shafts (29, 30), Fig. 2 (not shown), transmits the drive to a differential and final drive unit (28). In this case, a shaft 19 drives an interwheel differential gear 32, Fig. 4, for the wheels (10, 11), Fig. 2 (not shown), and an offset shaft 34 drives a shaft 31 through a differential gear 33 and a dog clutch or a limited slip clutch 50, e.g., an overunning clutch, such as disclosed in Specifications 1,185,043 and 1,236,981. The final drive 14, Fig. 5, includes a crown wheel 61 within a casing 52 which forms a suspension upright for connection to suspension members (not shown) by pins (not shown) passing through lugs 66, 68. The crown wheel 61 of drive 14 meshes a pinion 64 for the right hand unit and the corresponding wheel 61 for left hand unit 15, Fig. 1, meshes a pinion (64), Fig. 7 (not shown). A shaft assembly 57, Fig. 5, includes a wheel mounting 58.
