Abstract

1284821 Motor-cycles P W BOTHWELL 11 March 1970 11609/70 Heading B7H A two-wheeled vehicle includes an arrangement for driving its front and rear wheels from respective output shafts of a controlled-slip differential. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) a drive shaft 16 in a hollow frame member 17 is connected via a constant velocity universal joint (22), (Fig. 2, not shown), to spur gear G1 meshing with spur gear G2, the latter being rotatable with bevel gear G3 to rotate drive shaft portions 26, 27 through bevel gear G4. Portions 26, 27 are splined together; the latter drives splined axle 25 through bevel gearing. The shaft 16 is driven from one output shaft (15), (Fig. 3, not shown), of a controlled slip differential, the other output shaft of which is connected to the rear wheel. In another embodiment (Fig. 4) each wheel fork arm comprises separate legs; forward legs incorporate vibration dampers 30, 31 ends of which support links 28, 29 mounting axle 25; rearward legs incorporate pivots about which links 28, 29 are movable and one of the rearward legs houses drive shaft 5. The axle 25 is driven from shaft 5 through bevel and spur gearing, or bevel gearing and a duplex chain. Both embodiments may provide a drive shaft in each wheel fork arm.
