Abstract
547,938. Driving gearing for locomotives and the like. HAMMERSLEY, H. J. July 7, 1941, No. 8548. [Class 79 (ii)] A flexible drive for motor vehicle and electric or Diesel locomotives comprises co-axial hollow shafts E, H, Fig. 1, which are arranged around and clear of the vehicle axle L and of each other, the shaft H being connected to its driving member D and to its driven member M by resilient blocks G. In the construction shown in Fig. I an electric motor A is mounted on the main frame by stretchers B and its armature shaft carries a pinion C gearing with a wheel D fixed on the shaft E mounted in bearings F on the motor. The gear wheel D has recesses for a number of resilient blocks G mounted on pins G<SP>1</SP> carried by a plate H<SP>1</SP> fixed to the shaft H. The other end of the shaft H is connected by a similar flexible joint G, K either to the rail wheel M or to a disc fixed to the axle L. A pinion C may be provided at each end of the motor shaft and a corresponding gear D at each end of the shaft E. Modifications are described in which (1) the gearing C, D is dispensed with, the shaft E being the motor shaft, (2) the gear wheel D is mounted on bearings F, Fig. 3, on a short sleeve E<SP>1</SP> which is fixed to the motor casing which takes the place of the hollow shaft E, and (3) the motor is replaced by a gear-box having a shaft which takes the place of the motor shaft and is either above the axle as in the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, or is identical with the shaft E.
