Abstract

458,384. Propelling ships and aircraft. FOTTINGER, H., 172, Berlinerstrasse, Charlottenburg, Berlin. Oct. 14, 1935, No. 28367. Convention date, Oct. 13, 1934. [Classes 4 and 114] [See also Groups XXXII and XXXI] In a power-driven rail or road vehicle, ship, or aircraft provided with an energy-storing By-wheel (such as is described in Specification 432,670, [Group XXVI]), for assisting the main drive, at least part of the energy of bhis fly-wheel may be employed in driving additional driving- wheels, or propellers in the case of water and aircraft, in order to avoid overloading and consequent "slip" of the wheels or propellers driven by the main source of power. Fig. 2 shows a drive applied to a rail vehicle, in which the main motor 1 rotates the driving axle 5, and two energy-storing fly-wheels 8, 8<1> may be driven from it, either separately or together, through disconnectible couplings 4, 9<1>, or may be connected by couplings 10, 10<1> and gearing 13, 14 to separate driving axles 5<11>, 51 respectively, which may be associated with the same vehicle as the axle 5, or another vehicle, such as a locomotive tender. A similar drive employing only one fly-wheel 8 and additional driving axle is described. The fly-wheel, instead of being driven by the main motor 1, may be driven by an auxiliary motor, such as gas or steam turbine supplied with the exhaust gas or steam from the main motor or engine, or by live steam. Fig. 4 shows a locomotive in which the fly-wheel 8 is driven either through gearing by a high-speed auxiliary engine supplied with steam from the boiler or, as shown, by a turbine 25. It may be coupled to either the front or rear axle, or both, by disconnectible couplings 271, 2711. The turbine may be reversible, for driving the locomotive in reverse. Where electric power is employed the fly-wheel may be driven by an auxiliary motor, which can be connected in series with the main motor on starting and in parallel at higher speeds. Fig. 7 shows a construction in which a casing 33, pivoted on the main driving axle 5 of a bogie or undercarriage and resiliently supported at 34 by springs, contains the driving motor 1<1>, the fly-wheel 8, the gearing and couplings 30, 9 through which the motor drives the axle 5 and the fly-wheel, together with the coupling 10 and gearing between the fly-wheel and a shaft with universal joints 11, which shaft transmits the drive from the fly-wheel to the additional driving axle 5<1> by way of gearing in a casing 35 pivoted on this axle and supported at 36. In cases where a part only of the energy of the fly-wheel is supplied to the additional driving shaft, the remainder may be applied to the main driving shaft, or used for other purposes, and a differential gear is preferably provided between the two shafts. The fly-wheel may be carried on the bogie or undercarriage of a trailer, tender, or the like, one or more wheels of which it drives, and be supplied with power from the main vehicle by way of small diameter steam pipes or high-speed shafts.
