UNl'llEllfl JACOB BU GHLT, OF WINTERTHUR, SWITZERLAND.
STEAM LOCOMOTIVE.
Application filed June 29, 1925.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAooB BUCHLI, a citizen of the Swiss Republic, residing at Winterthur, Switzerland, have invented an improvement in Steam Locomotives, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
The invention relates to improvements in locomotives driven by piston-steam engines.
In the drive of steam locomotives the number of cylinders of the steam engine is bound to be limited owing to the limited available space, therefore the starting diagram is irregular with high steam pressures. More than four cylinders cannot be placed beside each other on a locomotive frame of the known type so that the smallest angles between the cranks amount to None of the known arrangements of the cylinders responds to the aim of giving a good starting diagram and this drawback is overcome by the subject matter of the present invention.
According to the invention a piston steam engine having at least four cylinders is arranged in front of the smoke box and actuates the driving axles by means of gear Wheels, cranks and connecting rods. In this manner the whole available width of the clearance gauge may be taken up by the steam engine and a correspondingly large number of cylinders may be arranged beside each other.
For example 6 cylinders arranged in two groups may be provided, the cranks of which may enclose between them any desired angle. These cylinders work on one crank shaft common to all the cylinders, and the crank shaft is in operative connection with a lay shaft by means of a toothed gearing rranged in the longitudinal centre of the crank shaft. The lay shaft is connected in a manner known per se by means of a parallel crank gear to the driving axles.
The ratio of the toothed gearing permits to utilize a high speed steam engine working in one or more stages and with small admissions.
A principal advantage of the present arrangement of the steam engine in front of the smoke box is the easy accessibility of the engine.
Constructional examples of the subject Serial No. 40,298.
matter of the present invention are illustrated on the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows in elevation the front part of a locomotive with the steam engine,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1, with parts shown in section, the lower group of cylinders of the steam engine being indicated in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 shows in a plan view a modified arrangement of the steam engine cylinders and Fig. 4 shows in elevation a further modification,
F 5 motive.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings the piston steam engine comprises two groups of cylinders 1 and 2 arranged in front of the smoke box 13 on the frame 141 and actuating in a known manner by means of connecting rods 3 a crank shaft 41. In the middle of the crank shaft 4 a pinion 5 is provided which meshes with a gear wheel 6 on the lay shaft 7 The groups of cylinders 1 and 2 as well as the shafts 4 and 7 are mounted upon and in the frame 8 respectively.
The turning moment is transmitted from the lay shaft 7 by means of cranks 9 and coupling rods 10, 11 to the driving wheels 12.
In the constructional example illustrated in Fig. 3 the number of cylinders of the steam engine is increased by utilizing four groups 1, 2, 21 and 22, whereby the groups 1 and 21 and 2 and 22 respectively are arranged diametrically opposite the common crank shaft.
Another way of increasing the number of cylinders of the steam engine is illustrated in ig. 4 in which the groups 1 and 31 of cylinders are arranged in V-fashion enclosing an angle of 90 between them.
Fig. 5 shows in elevation the whole locomotive with the boiler l t, the smoke box 13 and the engine 1 arranged on the locomotive frame 15 in front of the smoke box.
I claim:
1. In a steam driven locomotive in com bination, a wheeled frame provided with driving axles, a boiler having a smoke box and mounted on said frame, a steam engine having at least four cylinders arranged in front of said smoke box, a crank 'haft in said steam engine, a lay-shaft, a toothed is an elevation of the whole locogearing interposed between said crank shaft and said lay-shaft, and a parallel crank gear operatively connecting said lay-shaft to the driving axles.
2. In a steam driven locomotive in combination, a wheeled frame provided with driving axles, a boiler having a smoke box and mounted on said frame, a steam engine having at least four cylinders-arranged in front of said smoke box, a crank shaft in said steam engine, a lay-shaft, a toothed gearing interposed between said crank shaft and said lay-shaft, and arranged in the longitudinal centre of said crank shaft, and a parallel crank gear operatively connecting said lay-shaft to the driving axles.
3. In a steamdriven locomotive in combination, a wheeled frame-provided with driving axles, a boiler having a smoke box and mounted on said frame, a steam engine having at least four cylinders arranged in groups and in front of said smoke box, a
crank shaft in said steam engine, a layshaft, a toothed gearing interposed between said crank shaft and said lay-shaft intermediate of said groups of cylinders, and a parallel crank gear operatively connecting said lay-shaft to the driving axles.
4t. In a steam'driven locomotive in combination, a wheeled frame provided with driving axles, a boiler having a smoke box and mounted on said frame, a steam engine having at least four cylinders arranged in groups diametrically opposite each other and in front of said smoke box, a crank shaft in said steam engine. a lay-shaft, a toothed gearing interposed between said crank shaft and said lay shaft intermediate of said groups of cylinders, and a parallel crank gear operatively connecting said layshaft to the driving axles.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
JACOB BUCHLI.
