Abstract

584,869. Reciprocating pumps and air compressors. LEWINGTON, W. J. Oct. 26, 1944, No. 20858. [Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] The working chamber is comprised by the spaces between co-operating teeth 4, 16 on the cylinder head and piston, and relative axial rotation of the two is produced during reciprocation of the piston by means which does not necessarily involve contact of the faces of the teeth. This means comprises bevel gears 34, 35 fixed to the outer casing of the crankshaft 38 respectively. This shaft rotates in a crank case 37 mounted on bearings 13, 35A and carrying the input shaft 14. The crank pin 40 is stepped and a one-piece big end is held by a screw 43, and the crank case is closed by a cover 47 secured by a cross bar 48. Alternatively, the crankcase may be a normal two-part construction with a two-bearing crankshaft carrying a second pair of bevel gears which rotate idly. A two-stroke internal combustion engine is shown, the mixture being admitted by ports 8. and after compression under the piston it is transferred to the combustion chamber by ports 29, in an extension of the piston and, after firing, is exhausted by.ports 7. The chamber 23 may be used as a lubricant or air pump. The engine may be double-acting and the co-operative teeth may be mutable. Specification 155,400, [Class 7 (ii)], is referred to.
