Abstract

185,868. Reed, F. J. June 20, 1921. Pistons; guiding means within cylinder.-The piston w of a double-acting air pump for Diesel or other internal-combustion engines is reciprocated by means of two spring-pressed, rectangular studs 5 engaging pairs of right- and left-handed grooves t and u in the pump shaft, and is guided by spring-pressed keys x working in slots y in the cylinder wall. Studs 10 engaging the grooves seal the piston, which is started at the beginning of each stroke by the pressure of a cushioning spring 6 causing the studs 5 to pass from one of the pairs of grooves to the other.
