Abstract

Cam-actuated pumps; buckets; single-acting suction-valveless bucket pumps; multiple-acting bucket pumps; two or more barrels in series. -In a fuel pump for internal - combustion engines the suction valve 3 is freely movable in the bucket piston 2 and is carried along by the piston during both strokes. The valve stem 9 passes through a passage in the piston and carries an adjustable stop 11, which is engaged by the piston during the suction stroke. The end of the valve stem passes through a spring clip 10, so that the valve 3 does not move until engaged by the piston. The valve stem and stop 11 are accessible through ports 14 in the pump casing. The piston is actuated on the downstroke by a cam 5 engaging a roller 6 carried by an arm 7 pivoted to the piston. The return stroke is effected by a spring 8 engaging an enlarged portion 15 of the piston. During the upstroke this portion 15 may draw liquid into the chamber 16, and during the downstroke it forces this liquid through the piston 2 and valve 3 into the pump barrel, the stop 11 acting as an inlet valve to the chamber 6.
