Abstract

481,212. Two-stroke engines. YOUNG, R. D. Nov. 17, 1936, No. 31424. [Class 7 (ii)] In a two-stroke engine in which the combustion chamber A is located within a piston 5 which reciprocates over a fixed piston 7, the latter piston is adjustable to vary the compression ratio. Links 51 connect it to eccentric pins on rotatable members 50 having operating arms 54. The charge is drawn into a pump space B through a non-return, or enginedriven, valve, and one or more ports opposite ports 12 through which it is transferred, after compression, to the port 16 by an external transfer passage. An igniter or a liquid-fuel injection device is exposed by the port 16 at the end of the compression stroke, exhaust subsequently taking place through ports 17, and oval-sectioned exhaust pipes 18. If the engine is an oil engine the compression ratio is arranged to be adjusted so that compression ignition will take place. As the cylinder is protected from explosion pressure it may be constructed from aluminium or copper alloy. After removing the igniter a scraping tool can be inserted through the port 16 to remove the carbon from the combustion chamber.
