Abstract

537,821. Expelling exhaust gases. MIDDLETON, J. M., and MIDDLETON, O. T. Dec. 4, 1939, No. 31397. [Class 7 (ii)] The expulsion of the exhaust gases is assisted by a small auxiliary cylinder 1 permanently open to the engine cylinder and fitted with a spring - actuated plunger ; the auxiliary cylinder may be arranged co-axially on the head of the engine cylinder, or horizontally at the side of the cylinder, or on the cylinder head as shown in the Figure. In the last-mentioned case, cam means are provided for causing an initial movement of the auxiliary plunger 3, so that the charge compressed in the engine cylinder may act on the plunger and complete its movement to the position shown, compressing the spring 5 ; or the face of the plunger is sloped so as to leave a wedge-shaped clearance when forced towards the left-hand end of the auxiliary cylinder, as indicated in dotted lines. In order to reduce the clearance in the engine cylinder, the face of the main piston 2a may be formed with recesses to accommodate the inlet and exhaust valves 10, 11. A spark-plug or fuel injector 12 is provided on the auxiliary cylinder. In a further modification, the auxiliary cylinder may communicate with the engine cylinder through an intermediate chamber.
